The Sands of time was a return to form for a franchise that had been put on hold for a little more than a decade. Set in ancient Persia, the story follows The Prince as he accompanies his father in sacking a Maharaja's city. The prince comes into possession of the mystical Dagger of Time and his father's army acquires the Hourglass containing the fabled sands of time. At the behest of his father's villainous Vizier, the Prince is tricked into releasing the sands of time and unleashing Armageddon upon the world.

The gameplay in POP is a mix of acrobatic platforming and fighting. The Prince can do it all; wall run, vault over obstacles, climb walls and do flips. During fights he can defeat enemies with either his sword or his dagger of time. This in turn makes for some awesome takedowns; like using the dagger to turn enemies into sand before slaying them in half.

Speaking of the dagger, players could go back and forth through time to save the prince from dungeon pitfalls or palace booby traps. Time travel had been rarely portrayed in gaming and much less, so easily executed at the touch of a button.
