Ok, so Vice City wasn’t as revolutionary as Grand Theft Auto III or as epic in scale as San Andreas. However, it might be the most enjoyable GTA ever. Why? Well, its attention to detail for the 80’s period setting is staggering. Everything from the sunny beachside locations to drug-fuelled plot lines is designed to make you smile.

Its set in the fictional Vice City, which is heavily inspired by 1980s Miami and its two most famous period flicks; Miami Vice and more importantly, Scarface. Scarface’s influence is most evident in its plot: As a recently released ex-con Tommy Vercetti is ambushed in a drug deal and he seeks vengeance on those responsible while he builds a powerful criminal empire out of scratch.

While a lot of the gameplay time is spent walking the streets of Vice City as you randomly encounter rival gangs battling it out, the real meat of the game is stealing cars and going from one crime to another. The gameplay itself is so much fun; from stealing a golf cart and running over preppy golfers to hijacking a helicopter and flying it off into the sunset, all while listening to some awesome 80s music.
