20 Best Video Game Storylines Of The Decade (So Far)
16. Until Dawn
Unlike other entries on this list, Until Dawn's story is great specifically because it relies on all the cliches and stereotypes that usually sink video game narratives. Taking the best elements of the most iconic horror films of the past few decades, the underrated PS4 game acts as a loving ode to the video nasties of old.
But even then the plot of Until Dawn is more than a silly slasher flick adapted for consoles. The characters themselves, while initially appearing to nail the archetypes they're based on, are actually much more nuanced than you might first expect. Likewise the narrative itself is expertly unpredictable, acting as a tour de force of classic horror set-ups that never feel overly familiar.
And that's even before we get to how the game sets a new bar for player choice. Usually, plots that offer branching pathways can often lose focus or become too convoluted for their own good. Here however, the illusion of choice is just enough to make each individual play-through feel that bit more distinct, and it never once causes confusion or detracts from the perfectly pitched horror tale the game tries to tell.
