18. Firewatch
Bolstered by an art direction from the phenomenal Olly Moss, Firewatch aims to pick apart our own responses to life's most harrowing events. What do you do when something truly rocks your world, and nothing will ever be the same again?
Do you run from it? Try to rationalise? Find solace somewhere and think everything through?
Playing as one Henry after such an event, you're plunged into the middle of the Wyoming wilderness, gameplay revolving around performing menial tasks as you build a relationship with Delilah; a fellow 'fire-watcher' from across the valley on other side of your radio. You have full agency over this relationship depending on how you want to play, factoring into a more mysterious tale regarding the forest itself.
Let's just say there's something else going on, other than just a relaxing trip out in the woods...
Developed by a super-team of developers made up of creatives who worked on The Walking Dead, Mark of the Ninja and Gone Home, Campo Santo's Firewatch takes you on one hell of an immersive, emotional ride, especially as you start stitching everything together when the credits roll.
