17. Steamworld Dig 2

A stunning and completely unexpected gem (especially on Nintendo Switch), the Steamworld games have always had their fans, but Dig 2 is a masterpiece from top to bottom.

Essentially "another 2D platformer", SD2's charms come from both an addictive mining mechanic that continually gets bolstered by better tools and upgrade abilities and a brilliant, eye-popping visual style. Halfway between Ori & the Blind Forest's use of primary colours to accentuate a level and 2005's Robots, it makes uncovering every new item a blast.

And though there's more to Steamworld Dig 2 - from a propulsive story to a progression that by game's end, really feels mechanically meaningful - the thing that'll sink its hooks in deep is just how perfectly tactile hacking through every new clump of dirt feels.
