20 Best Video Games Of 2018

4. Marvel's Spider-Man

Spider Man PS4 Avengers
Insomniac

You don't realise just how much Spider-Man brought to the open-world table until you compare it to forebears like Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy or the older Spider-Man movie tie-ins.

Insomniac's turn with the web-head gave us a stunning 1:16 recreation of New York City, filled to the brim with crimes to stop, collectibles to hoover up, and one of the best Spider-Man stories ever committed to code. Yuri Lowenthal's Peter Parker is an established career Spidey, but the world around him is filled with original ideas like Mary Jane being a reporter for the Daily Bugle, Doc Ock being your mentor, and J. Jonah Jameson being an Alex Jones-inspired nutjob.

Thankfully, gameplay is sublime, hurtling you from one exhilarating set-piece to the next; the accompanying character-driven story resulting in the tightest single player experience of the year.

It felt damn good to play as Spider-Man in New York back in 2004's Sam Raimi tie-in, but this is the new industry standard many will fail to match up to.
