18. Accentuating A Cuban/Haitian Conflict

The Cuban-Haitian conflict in Vice City took the shape of a gang war between the Los Cabrones and the Haitian street gangs. This war was sparked following the murder of a Haitian ganglord, something the the Haitians believed Los Cabrones were responsible for.

Up to this point no conflict in a GTA game had so obviously split the warring factions by race or ethnicity, and there was a tremendous backlash at this when the game released. Jean-Robert Lafortune of the Haitian American Grassroots Coalition explained that no game should be "designed to destroy an ethnic group".

At the time Rockstar's parent company Take-Two Interactive Software apologised and added that no offence was meant in depicting the conflict between the two groups as being a drug-fuelled mess, but that apology was far from enough to placate the offended parties. Grand Theft Auto's infamy grew immensely with this ill-advised narrative.
