If you thought the orphaned N was unusual in Black & White, then you definitely need to meet Kalos' 3,000 year old, nine foot tall former king. AZ is an important character during the events of the story in Pokémon X & Y, and absolutely one of the strangest characters the games have ever produced.

AZ tells players a story of a man who had a beloved Pokémon that sadly died and left him grieving. The man was then tricked into creating an item to bring the creature back to life, but due to his immense rage he turned the device into an ultimate weapon. After players defeat Lysandre and stop him using the weapon, AZ reappears as a freed man and a friendly battle ensues.

AZ's story represents the most surreal of any human character in a Pokémon game, and the tale of his Pokémon Floette being killed in a war is startlingly sad for a game aimed at younger audiences.

Incidentally, this story also lends weight to the theory that the Pokémon world was subjected to a huge war at some point in its history - a theory that has its origins embedded in generation one and the inclusion of gym leader Lt. Surge.
