It's unlikely that many of us have ever spent much time in a real desert, but don't they just seem like really awful and scary places? Of course they do, but the deserts in our world seem like nothing when you consider the dangers that would await you in a desert in a Pokémon region.

Mostly this is thanks to Cacturne, the Scarecrow Pokémon from generation three. As well as looking like a more menacing, vegetation version of Jack Skellington, this Pokémon is actually said to hunt weary travellers who foolishly exhaust themselves in deserts as night draws in.

In the Black & White Pokédex it's said that "it becomes active at night, seeking prey that is exhausted from the day's desert heat", and that these Pokémon hunt incapacitated travellers in packs. Just imagine the sheer terror you'd feel turning around to find that those trees you thought were moving were actually following you all along!
