When the Toy Story movies introduced a generation of kids to the idea that their toys had lives of their own back in the 90s, people really started to think a lot differently about the way they treated their possessions. It seems this also had an effect on the folks at Game Freak, too, as evidenced by the history of Banette.

Banette's Pokédex notes state that it used to be a sad plush doll that was thrown away by its child owner, and that was subsequently possessed by cursed energy. Some entires build on this event further, suggesting that Banette manages to come to life to satisfy the grudge it holds against its former owner.

While you may suggest there's a potentially happy ending in the idea that a Banette could yet find happiness by being adopted by a loving trainer instead, there's still just something so creepy about the idea that these powerful creatures mostly exist to hunt and punish a careless child.
