20 Comic Book Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
8. Injustice: Gods Among Us
Succeeding where EA's Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects failed, Mortal Kombat-devs NetherRealm decided to do a far more impactful take on these characters squaring off than they did in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe. The roster was expanded, overblown character specials were brought in from Mortal Kombat 9 (one of which saw Aquaman summon a shark to gobble up his opponent's torso), and the fighting engine in general was given a supercharged feel to try and connote the power of those who were doing battle. It came with a tie-in comic series that fleshed out every character's motives too, but the key point of Superman going evil, enslaving all of mankind after being tricked into killing Lois Lane whilst in a Joker Gas-induced stupor, was an immediately interesting selling point. By having Supes himself be your "Muahaha"-ing villain it already made Injustice stand out, and between the arena-based finishers, perfectly-balanced roster (featuring everyone from Solomun Grundy to Nightwing) and a campaign that aped Mortal Kombat 9's cutscene-straight-into-gameplay model, Injustice is the premiere 3D fighter for any comic fan, regardless of their DC/Marvel alliance.
