20 Comic Book Video Games You Must Play Before You Die

1. Spider-Man (2000)

The top spot for all of comic games should go to the one that best replicates the magic of turning the page in the first place. From the Stan Lee-narrated intro to the ridiculously-fun story that takes you from tackling Venom to running into Daredevil, saving Mary Jane and even having a conversation with The Punisher, developer Neversoft pulled out all the stops to make their mark on the character a timeless one. In terms of controls it favoured tackling opponents on the ground (this was two years before the Spider-Man 2 movie game), although you were free to zip up to ceilings and out of harm's way at the touch of a button. Melee combat was frantic and came with tons of "THWACK!"-style sound effects, level design was immensely varied and you could even unlock artwork for the original comics through scattered collectibles. Spidey was voiced by Spider-Man Unlimited's Rino Romano (the perfect mix of whininess and attitude to sell the character) and humour was spot-on throughout. This is best Spidey game, the best Marvel game - and the best use of a comic property so far. What's your one comic book video game simply everyone must play? Let us know in the comments!
