Gaming has always thrived when two big series' compete to be crowned the best in a certain genre. Pro Evolution Soccer and Fifa. Call of Duty and Battlefield. Tekken and Street Fighter; perhaps though, the biggest clash in gaming is currently the two biggest Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games - League Of Legends and Dota 2. Both dominate the eSports circuit currently and a quick glance at the most popular streams on Twitch shows the immense popularity of both titles. They're almost impossible to separate... so we're not going to. The roots of both games lie in an old Warcraft III mod called Defence Of The Ancients (see where DOTA gets its name from now?). The scenario sees two teams fighting to destroy the opposing team's ancient. Unlike other strategy games, each player controls one hero who levels up and gains skills throughout the match to improve. It proved immensely popular and its inspiration has clear in both League Of Legends and Dota 2. Both games contain an insane number of heroes/champions to control (both games feature over 100) meaning there's plenty of different play-styles to learn. It can be pretty unforgiving for new players to jump into a MOBA (especially when the seasoned veterans are berating your clueless ways) but stick with it and you'll understand why the fast-paced strategic nature of MOBA games is so popular. Maybe you'll even get good enough to compete globally. It wouldn't be a bad idea at all; the World Championships in League of Legends this year will have a prize pool of $1,000,000. That's an amazing amount of money for winning a video game tournament; it just shows the mark that both League of Legends and DOTA 2 have made on the gaming landscape in recent times. Neither game shows signs of dying down anytime soon either, so strap yourself in and hail your new MOBA overlords.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
