Obsidian, inspired by InXile's success of using Kickstarter to fund Wasteland 2, decided to go down the same route with their upcoming, and hotly anticipated, fantasy role-playing game Pillars of Eternity (previously Project Eternity). A good decision, it seems, as the $1.1 million Kickstarter goal was dwarfed by the final figure of $3.9 million. With extra money coming from other crowdfunding sources, Obsidian raised a total of $4.1 million for their RPG. Featuring party-based, real-time-with-pause tactical gameplay, and a fixed isometrical view, Pillars Of Eternity is seen as the spiritual successor to the famed Infinity Engine games such Baldur's Gate and Planetscape: Torment.
