Having been unable to agree a deal with a publisher for many year, David Braben decided to use crowdfunding as a means to raise development funds for his fourth entry into the Elite series. The epic space adventure, trading, and combat simulator that is Elite: Dangerous had $1.5 million raised through Kickstarter, with the remaining amount coming from other crowdfunding sources. The game did court controversy in November 2014 when it was announced the offline mode would be removed. This caused some backers to demand their money back, and another case of not every crowdfunding project going to plan. As for the game itself, it was greeted with mostly positive reviews, with plenty of players commenting on its potential - something future updates will hopefully fulfil.
