After the release of the 2007 first-person shooter that carried the same name, creator of the Shadowrun tabletop role-playing games, Jordan Weisman, decided he wanted to make a game set in the same universe which had a more authentic tone. Fans of his original pen and paper version had been crying out for game that did Shadowrun justice for years; although the 1993 Nintendo release is regarded as being an excellent interpretation, it was time for something new and updated. So it was no surprise when the game's Kickstarter campaign, which was set at a target of $400,000, eventually reached $1.8 million. The RPG with its turn-based combat was quite well received on its release, especially by fans of the table-top games, but once the Dragonfall expansion pack was released and eventually turned into a stand-alone product, gamers finally received the ultimate Shadowrun experience.
