9. The Dam - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
KonamiIn honesty, we could list 1989's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game in its entirety as one giant, prolonged, agonising moment of frustration, because the game as a whole is just too, too difficult. Frequently cited as one of the most challenging video games ever released for the NES, the game's most rage-inducing section is undeniably the Dam level, which may well have been the game that started gamers' collective hatred towards water levels in the first place. So, what's so tough about it? For starters, players are quickly forced to get used to a new set of controls for the swimming, then there's the electric seaweed which will almost certainly kill all but the most skilled players, oh, and a two-minute time limit to disarm eight freaking bombs. Considering how early on in the game the Dam level is, it's not surprising that most players never got any further in the game, even if it ironically gets considerably easier if you do manage to survive this aquatic monstrosity.
