20 Games That Made The Movies BETTER
11. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The Lord of the Rings has never needed promotion in the form of video game tie-ins, and it has often felt like the game's developers were well aware of that - seemingly knowing that the only way people were going to get behind a game adaptation was if it did the material justice. Well, EA's Return of the King managed that and more.
The game boasts an embarrassment of riches, with a full Fellowship of characters to choose from (or what remains of them - sorry, Boromir!), each with the appropriate specialties and limitations: Legolas is quick with a bow, for example; whereas, Gimli is slower but more powerful in close combat. And, because it was released before online multiplayer really took off, every level is local multiplayer for a more social gaming experience.
The levels themselves draw on the different skills of the various characters, and the multiple storyline strands on offer mean you are never confined to just one aspect of the film, but get to experience each major dramatic moment in all its glory. Highlights of which include the full journey to recruit the King of the Dead, and battling the Mouth of Sauron - a character that only appears in the extended edition of the film, and who nobody would yet have seen upon the game's release (which came a full month before the extended edition hit shelves).
