20 Games That Made The Movies BETTER
6. King Kong (2005)
Peter Jackson's King Kong was a passion project, granted to him by the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and yet it didn't really do anything for the cinematic canon. The film may have been popular at the time, but as a re-tread of the original, with CG that doesn't stand up today, there are not many reasons to return to it - unless you go via console.
Faithful to the film to a fault, the game takes us to Skull Island with Big Apple scriptwriter Jack Driscoll, to find kaiju gorilla King Kong. Once there, we are given the opportunity to alternate between Driscoll and Kong depending on the level, using survival tactics and found weaponry at ground level, and more of a smash-bash approach as the great ape. The graphics of the game, unlike the effects of the film, are way ahead of its time, and the gameplay fully immersive, bringing the Island, and the story, to life.
Given how close it tacks to the film's plot, it is surprising the game is so good, and yet it seems every decision Ubisoft made was designed to serve the player, the action and the story, including a limited HUD that forces us to think on our feet and react as the characters in the film would. Plus it offers one thing the film couldn't - a happy alternate ending.
