20 Games That Made The Movies BETTER
7. The Mummy Demastered (2017)
Universal has had a rough time with its monsters in the 21st century, struggling to put out movies that effectively reimagine the creatures for a new generation of viewers. Such is the tale of the Tom Cruise vehicle The Mummy, which fell so flat on its face it led to the cancellation of the entire planned Dark Universe series of films. But not before WayForward Technologies put out an accompanying game.
The Mummy Demastered is a side-scroller, MetroidVania game set both during and alongside the events of the film, weaving in and out of the larger narrative. We play as a soldier working for the Prodigium secret society, attempting to hunt down the supernatural threats that the excavation of new mummy Princess Ahmanet has unleashed.
The format suits the game to the ground, bypassing what could have been a choppy 3D game in favour of pixels, action and 2D exploration. The enemies are fun, the weapons in-keeping with the established film universe and the 8-bit synthwave soundtrack highly enjoyable, but the game’s most crucial feature is that it justifies the very existence of the god-awful film.
