Although 1990s Herzog Zwei is considered to be the first ever real-time strategy game, Dune II is the first modern RTS - its interface becoming the basis for subsequent games in the genre. With its resource gathering, tech trees, and destroy the enemy base objectives, Dune II really was the O.G. of RTS. Plus, if you happened to be a fan of the Dune universe, it was even better. It was such a revelation to play Dune 2, especially for those who had never seen a RTS style of game before. Despite only being able to select one unit at a time, it was immensely addictive. As soon as one houses campaign had been completed, players would instantly start the next, excited to see what new weapons of war would become available. It wasnt until Command and Conquer appeared some years later that the genre reached its next level of evolution.
Lover of all things PC. A fan of inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin. Remembers when 'geek' was an insult. Still passionately believes Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines was the greatest game ever made.
