20 Greatest Ever Pokemon Designs

4. Charizard

Charizard To explain why exactly Charizard is on this list I need only one sentence: Charizard is a dragon. That€™s it! That€™s pretty much the only thing I have to say €“ Charizard is a dragon and so should be appreciated for that. From the head to the wings down to the flame-topped tail, Charizard is most certainly the best type of fictional lizard around. Charizard is a fire type, and actually looks capable of breathing fire. Perhaps it€™s the flame on its tail, perhaps it€™s the general colour scheme €“ but Charizard actually resembles a traditional dragon, one capable of levelling whole villages with one puff of flame. Thus its design is very smart €“ I cannot think of a single piece of promotional art that depicts Charizard breathing fire, but you never doubt that it can. You also never doubt that it can fly, which is another cool thing about Charizard. There are many variations of dragon, but my favourite kind was always the sort that could take to the air. Charizard looks perfectly suited to taking to the air, it has wings that actually look practical. This practicality includes matters of weight €“ Charizard€™s wings look perfectly capable of holding it in the air, something not to be underestimated in the world of Pokémon physics. It is also possibly the starter with the best progression from first to final form. Most starters get faintly ridiculous by the time that it gets to their final form, usually going up on two legs and getting bigger instead of better designed. Charizard is on two legs, yes, and certainly gets bigger €“ but the design only improves over time. Evolution gives Charizard wings, a huge tail and the general aspect of a dragon €“ thus making it cooler. It also has direct links to its earlier forms. Which makes it not only cool, but a great example of logical progression. Charizard has an absolutely fantastic design overall. It€™s big, tough, an excellent final form and resembles a dragon besides. It looks like something that could soar through the air with ease, raining fire down on all of its enemies. And that definitely makes it the best dragon around, even if it€™s nowhere near a dragon type.
