1. Samus Aran (Metroid)

Ever since the twist that, shock, the power-armoured space badass of the original Metroid was, in fact, a women, Samus Aran has gone down in history as one of the most fan-loved characters in the whole of gaming. With a flurry of brilliant releases, the popularity of Samus only increased with each excellent new title, to the point where the character has come to represent gaming as symbol in the wider mainstream. Like Mario or Crash Bandicoot, Samus is just about synonymous with the medium at this point. While she might not have been done justice in recent years, it's probably a testament to her popularity as a character that even after such a long dry-spell, fans are still clamouring for the undoubtedly epic comeback Samus deserves.
