Developer: Nintendo Release: 2004 Notable Games: Pokemon Black & White, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World It's funny to think that, only a decade ago, it was a pretty exciting concept to have a fully-functioning touch screen on a gaming device. These days, touch screens are synonymous with smartphones and used in many facets of life, but the Nintendo DS was the first popular device to popularise the use of a screen that you can touch. The Nintendo DS looked totally bizarre compared to anything that had come before it. Its two screens in combination with the stylus-operated touch functionality led many to question just how suited to handheld gaming the DS would actually be. It was a hit though, appealing to both core gamers and more casual audiences, with games like Animal Crossing: Wild World and Pokemon Black & White still among the best that handheld gaming has to offer.
