20 Greatest Multiplayer Games Ever

13. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Developer: Infinity Ward Platform: PC, Mac OS X, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 Release: 2007 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was absolutely revolutionary on its release, particularly with regards to multiplayer. While many may not be happy with the new direction Modern Warfare brought to the genre, there's no doubt that the game itself was, and still is, brilliant. The maps in Modern Warfare varied between tight corridor shooting and medium-ranged larger environments, with a constant focus on a fast pace and twitchy mechanics. The weapons were purposefully lacking in recoil compared to most military shooters at the time, making flanking and awareness far more important than learning each weapon. It was the sense of progression from kill streaks and levelling up to receive unlocks that really brought gamers back again and again, in a formula that only became stale a few sequels later.
