20 Greatest Sci-Fi Video Games Of All-Time

13. Quake II

Developed by the same people who gave us the Doom series, Quake II first hit store shelves in 1997 for PC and would keep console users waiting another two years before they could leap into its exceptional sci-fi universe. Quake II is a first person shooter which sees you take on the role of a marine named Bitterman who is trying to protect Earth from being subjected to an alien invasion by taking part in a mission called €˜Operation Alien Overlord€™. The single player campaign is split up into missions which each combine to make the complete narrative; a trend which is all too common nowadays but which many FPS games before Quake II hadn't used. It also implements CGI cut scenes in order to augment the overarching narrative. The multiplayer aspect of Quake II was immensely fun, and offered the customisation of your character for the first time in the Quake game series. There were also several different game modes on offer including deathmatch and capture the flag, and you could also complete the game€™s single player campaign with a partner if you wanted an opportunity to relive the compelling single player with a friend. Quake II offers the incredible arsenal of weapons you expect from all of the best sci-fi shooters, including the railgun which fires uranium slugs at your opponents and is just as devastating as that sounds. Quake II has a lot to offer in its multiplayer and single player campaign and is the pearl of the excellent sci-fi franchise.
