Wolfenstein might have been the first 'modern' FPS, but 1993's Doom is far more popular than its Nazi hunting brother. Pitting a player against seemingly endless swarms of Cacodemons and Lost Souls, Doom was an incredible game that's just as fun now as it was over 20 years ago. Part of the secret to Doom's success was in the iconic weaponry. Running around with a chainsaw, slicing up Cyberdemons, was an exhilarating experience unlike anything gamers had experienced before. It was also the game that introduced the BFG9000, a room-emptying death machine that's been much-imitated ever since. Doom was like playing through a big, dumb action movie, and it's a must play for anyone even remotely interested in the history of FPS gaming. Or having fun in general, for that matter.
