20 Greatest Strategy Games Of All Time

19. Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Developer: Westwood Studios Released: 1995 Offering up the ultimate 'What If?' scenario, Command & Conquer: Red Alert is set in an alternative universe in which Adolf Hitler never rose to power. It might sound like an ideal situation, but having Hitler out the picture means that the Soviet Union war machine has grown larger than anything that emerged from World War II. Red Alert features a joyously over-the-top campaign, told from either the Allied or Soviet perspective depending on which disc is played. The gameplay makes use of asymmetrical factions, relying on the player's ability to make up for the factions' disadvantages with their strengths, rather than utilising the usual rock-paper-scissors formula.
