20 Greatest Strategy Games Of All Time

18. DEFCON

Developer: Introversion Software Released: 2006 DEFCON is strategy gaming at its purest. It might feature simple, vector-based graphics and relatively straight-forward gameplay, but DEFCON offers a true battle of minds. Set during an all-out nuclear war, the aim is simply to be in control of the most assets at the end of it all. Unlike most real-time strategies, DEFCON features no manual unit production, no resource collection and no technology tree upgrades. Instead, the strategy lies in where players position their forces, while a timed DEFCON system that counts down from 5 to 1 limits the hostile actions that players can take. Multiplayer games can be ridiculously intense, and players must be prepared to take heavy losses regardless of the outcome.
