20 Greatest Video Games Of 2013

18. State Of Decay

It stands to reason that if you're going to do a zombie game in 2013, following the downtrodden-mastery of Telltale's Walking Dead series, or Valve's Left 4 Dead series, you need to bring something original to the table. Hence why State of Decay is a living, breathing world for you to live in, scavenging for food and conquering various parts of the map one section at a time, all the while building up trusting - or not so trusting - relationships with survivors you meet along the way. Whilst the graphics on console versions aren't the strong point here, in terms of immersion, inventory management and overall immersion, State of Decay provides a constant sense of danger and peril like no other. In a genius turn, whenever you turn the game off, time continues to tick by, so should you not be suitably tucked up in a safe house or protected encampment, you could boot your save back up to find you've been robbed, or that a party member has died, gone stab-happily insane, or just legged it in the opposite direction with some of your supplies. It takes that sense of "what would I do in that situation?" you have when watching shows like The Walking Dead, and manages to keep pulses pounding consistently for as many hours as you're willing to put into it, and although there is a lengthy story to take part in, it's the fun you'll have living out your own 'Zombie Plan' that will stick with you long afterwards.
