17. Metro: Last Light
If there's a theme that's 'in' throughout 2013, it's that of the sullen-survivor doing what they can to get by. Last Light is the sequel to the cult classic Metro 2033, and another entry in the post-apocalyptic tale of Artyom, a ranger who is at the heart of all going on within this glum underground world. Last Light is not afraid to hit home with it's punches, showcasing what a potential future would be should humanity be forced underground, taking with them only pieces of the rulesets that previously bound them. There is a constant attempt to restore order and stability in such a world, yet as Artyom you encounter everything from antagonistic soldiers to mutated creatures who stalk you in the dark. The gameplay on display is of the most sublime first-person shooter, presenting the various dimly-lit corridors of the Metro tunnels in such a way that you'll swear you saw a creature move in the distance, only for it to come lunging at you. With a great mix of action and stealth-gameplay, the latest addition to the Metro canon is one that deserves your attention, and with more titles on the way that will surely continue this upward curve of quality, it can only bring more engaging worlds to explore.
