Jason Mars may be the butt of a lot of jokes due to the game's pretty awful "Press X to Jason" sequence, but he's a vitally important character in Heavy Rain, and establishes the troubled back story of his father, protagonist Ethan. When the family visit a mall in the game's prologue section, Jason becomes separated from Ethan, and after panickedly searching for him, Ethan finds Jason about to cross the street without looking, while a car barrels towards him. Ethan jumps in front of the car, as we cut to black. It turns out that Ethan ends up in a long coma, but despite him absorbing most of the damage, it is Jason who dies in the accident, causing Ethan severe psychological problems and also ruining his marriage. Later, his other son Shaun goes missing, feared to have been kidnapped by the infamous Origami Killer, and so Ethan must overcome his crippling issues to save the life of his one remaining son. Jason's death has a major dramatic bearing on the rest of the story, and despite the poor voice acting and overall silliness of Jason's death (a 10-year-old should know better than to walk blindly into the street), it adds considerably to Ethan's character and gives him even more of an impetus to save his other son.
