One of the finest protagonists in any Rockstar game, John Marston was a loveable outlaw who was easy to get behind, especially as he had to deal with the double-crossing, yellow-bellied Bureau of Investigation and the corrupt Edgar Ross. Even after carrying out every dirty deed he asked, Ross just couldn't leave Marston alone, and at the end of the game shows up at his ranch with a fleet of men. John sends his wife Abigail and son Jack on their way while he steps out of the barn to hold Ross and his men off. At this point, the player has to quick-draw as many men as possible, but the outcome is inevitable and unavoidable: John ends up violently peppered with bullets, and soon dies, much to the pleasure of Ross. Tragic and heroic though John's death was, the player thankfully gets an opportunity for revenge, even redemption, in the game's epilogue, as they take control of an older Jack, as he hunts down a retired Ross. Rockstar always does endings well, though Red Dead arguably outdoes even the cinematic climaxes of the Grand Theft Auto games with its bittersweet emotion and level of satisfaction.
