Cole Phelps is the protagonist of Rockstar's divisive L.A. Noire, a fast-rising hotshot Detective in the LAPD, motion-and-voice-captured by Mad Men's Aaron Staton. Phelps meets his surprising demise at the end of the game as he tries to escape a flooding river tunnel. After helping Jack Kelso and lover Elsa out of the tunnel, there simply wasn't enough time for Phelps to escape before he was overcome by a giant wave of water, a second after telling Kelso, Elsa and Herschel Biggs a simple "Goodbye." The final scene of the game has everyone attending Phelps' funeral, in easily one of the most downbeat endings Rockstar has ever made. Most of the criminals involved in the Suburban Redevelopment Fund have not just avoided prosecution, but are speaking in Phelps' honour at his funeral, as the ultimate slap in the face to his memory. Had Phelps' death at least felt like it were for something grand and important, it may have been more satisfying and epic, but alas, as we learned in L.A. Noire, that's not always how life works.
