20 Most Important Gaming Deaths This Decade

2. Paz Ortega Andrade - Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014)

Paz was first introduced to the MGS franchise in the game Peace Walker, and she showed up once again in the prologue to The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes. Despite being feared dead at the end of Peace Walker, it transpires that Paz is very much alive, and is being held at Camp Omega for interrogation. As Big Boss, the player must rescue both her and child soldier Chico, but once you make it onto the chopper, they quickly realise something is wrong: cuts to Paz's stomach suggest that a bomb has been placed inside her. Emergency surgery is performed to remove the bomb, much to Paz's anguish, but before long, she reveals that there's a second bomb concealed inside her, with the implication being that it's been shoved into her lady parts. In order to save everyone on-board, Paz decides to jump out of the helicopter mere moments before she explodes, sending the chopper into a tailspin as the game comes to a close. The shocking nature of Paz's death as well as the controversial audio tape obtained earlier in the game, which appears to depict Paz's rape, asked questions about what maturity meant in video games. Many thought that Kojima had simply gone too far, while others praised his bold attempt at taboo-breaking.
