13. Big Boss - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots (2008)
After beating Liquid Ocelot to death atop Outer Haven, it seemed like Solid Snake was pretty much done with life. He goes to Big Boss' grave site with the intent of shooting himself, but is interrupted by a miraculously alive Big Boss, leading to a lengthy epilogue sequence in which Boss explains many of the dangling plot threads and essentially ties up Snake's story once and for all. Big Boss' death comes as a result of the new strain of FOXDIE injected into Snake by Drebin, an effort by the Patriot AIs to eliminate everyone in the rival Patriot faction to Major Zero's outfit. Big Boss sits down at The Boss' grave and quietly expires, but not before urging Snake to spend his final days at peace rather than waging war. Cut to black, and that's the end of Solid Snake's tremendous journey. Bringing back Big Boss from beyond the grave was a crazy move for sure, but a shocking and brilliantly-played one which gave fans the closure they so desperately needed, and provided one of gaming's most bada** characters with a fitting demise.
