Believe it or not, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask was made less due to artistic inspiration than a bet between game developers.

Franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto originally intended to release a remix/expansion of The Ocarina of Time within a year of its release, but when franchise director Eiji Aonuma protested, Miyamoto made a bet with him - if he could make a new fully-fledged Zelda game in a year, then he'd cancel the expansion.

And that's how Majora's Mask was born, which impressively ended up releasing just 17 months after Ocarina hit stores. Not quite a year, but not bloody bad.
