20 Mind-Blowing Things You Didn't Know About Metal Gear Solid 2

11. It Almost Had A Cel-Shaded Art Style

It's basically impossible to imagine Metal Gear Solid 2 looking any different than it does, but earlier in the game's development Kojima toyed around with the idea of a cel-shaded art style.

Konami have released a few clips of prototype footage featuring cel-shaded character models of both Snake and Mei Ling, and it's safe to say that Kojima was probably smart not to stay the course.

Though he did end up releasing a Metal Gear spin-off with cel-shaded visuals a few years later - the PSP game Metal Gear Acid 2 - given the historically divisive nature of cel-shading, especially when franchises switch aesthetics out of nowhere, it would've been a majorly risky move.

Given how basically timeless Metal Gear Solid 2's final art style actually is, it's tough to argue with the end result.
