20 Mind-Blowing Things You Didn't Know About Metal Gear Solid 2

12. Vamp Was Originally Supposed To Be A Woman

Though it's difficult to picture Vamp any other way, the character's design was considerably laboured over during pre-production, with Kojima originally envisioning him as a woman.

But once Kojima came up with the character of Fortune, he felt that it made more sense for the duo to be of different genders, and so made Vamp a man instead.

Consequently, Vamp's final design was inspired heavily by Spanish flamenco dancer Joaquín Cortés, which makes a lot of sense when you consider Vamp's lithe movements throughout the game.

It isn't clear when Kojima came up with the character's name, but it would've seemingly fit the character either way, as either a vampire or the female seductress those early designs suggest she was initially intended to be.
