Though it's no secret that the game's first demo unveiling at E3 2000 blew critics and fans away, you might not appreciate just how widespread its impact truly was.

The game's extremely high graphical fidelity and advanced gameplay mechanics offered such a strong advertisement for the PS2 - which had already released in Japan but hadn't yet hit stores elsewhere - that today the reveal is largely credited with cementing the console's early success.

The PS2's out-of-the-gate performance sustained throughout the sixth console generation, where it remained a market leader that left the Xbox, GameCube, and especially the Dreamcast firmly in the dust.

Few games get to have this much sway over the gaming industry itself, and so in that regard Metal Gear Solid 2 truly was a once-in-a-generation title.
