The country of Niue is a dependancy of New Zealand, located in the South Pacific, and has a population of around 1400 people. What does this have to do with Pokémon? Well, in 2001, Niue released a series of 5 coins featuring Pokémon characters - and not just to collect, they were actually used as proper money.

For example, the $1 dollar coin featured Pikachu on the front. Other coins with Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Meowth on the front were also released. They're pretty rare now, so if you have one, they'll fetch a pretty penny on eBay.

Niue has also released Star Wars themed currency, so whoever is in charge of the money over there clearly has awesome taste.
