20 Most Embarrassing Video Game Moments Since 2000
13. #Gamergate
The dilemma of Gamergate started in 2014, stemming from blog posts by Eron Gjoni. He was the ex-boyfriend of Zoe Quinn, an independent game developer who had made Depression Quest; a text heavy game based on Quinn's real life struggles. The blog posts by Gjoni accused Quinn of cheating on him with five men, all involved in the gaming industry. His claim was that she did it to get ahead, and in particular that she slept with Kotaku writer Nathan Grayson for favorable coverage of her game.
After the posting of the blogs, threats of both physical and sexual in nature were sent to Quinn. On top of that, her personal information like private photos and home address were leaked, forcing Quinn to leave her home. The harassment wouldn't stop there either, as other females in the industry would come under harassment as well.
Gamergate soon became a launching pad for a discussion on the "ethics and corruption in video game journalism", though most of the anonymous users taking part in Gamergate were more worried about harassment than professional ethicality. The situation went from 0 to 100 fast, and has since been a blight on the gaming industry.
As for those accusations of Quinn sleeping with Nathan Grayson for favorable reviews, it was bullsh*t. Grayson never even reviewed Quinn's game, though he did write a half-sentence about it before his relationship with her ever even started.
