20 Most Intense Video Game Moments Of The Decade
9. The Witcher III - The Battle Of Kaer Morhen
The Battle Of Kaer Morhen is exactly what the RPG genre was made for. Epic in scale, layered into the story and featuring cameos from those you’ve helped along the way. There’s even a few choices for you to make to ensure you’re truly playing your way.
Having played a few sections of the game as Ciri but spent most time with Geralt, you feel both sides of the reunion when the pair finally meet. Before long though, the battle must get underway.
There’s five distinct sections to the battle; three as Geralt and two as Ciri. Like all great fantasy battles, the scale is never lost, but it’s the small moments which truly make it. Rarely are you tasked with just ‘go here, slay faceless hoard’.
Each section breaks down the fight into smaller character moments. Someone is in trouble, needs help, or has a solution. It’s a character exploration inside a battle, and that’s why it’s so memorable.
That said, the actually gameplay is unrelentingly intense. Whether you’re dodging fireballs, winning duels or just slashing your way to the portals, the scope of the battle is never lost, no matter how much they zoom in on specific moments.
