20 Most Intense Video Game Moments Of The Decade

5. Spider-Man - Doc Ock Fight

Spider man animated series genesis

The Batman: Arkham series raised the bar for superhero games this generation, but Spider-Man swung right over it in 2018. Somehow frenetic and fluid at the same time, Spider-Man was a truly brilliant game.

Releasing in the same year as God Of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 meant it was a little overlooked for the end of year awards, but with the upcoming Marvel Gaming Universe, it looks set to have built a considerable legacy.

Boss battle pacing and iffy stealth sections may have let it down, but through Doc Ock, Insomniac's Spidey definitely finished strong.

Sure, it was a great boss battle which used the game's intuitive mechanics brilliantly, but the intensity came from elsewhere. This was arguably the best portrayal of Doc Ock ever, although Spider-Man 2, Superior Spider-Man and Into The Spider-Verse all give it a run for its money.

We saw Doc Ock as a kind hearted mentor, a man who (like Peter) rejected monetary gain for the freedom to help people. Seeing that be corrupted so absolutely was heartbreaking, and leads into Peter's intense heart to heart, quickly followed up by the one two sucker punch with Aunt May.
