13. XCOM: Enemy Within
Sometimes there comes a gameplay formula so exquisite, so refined and so tested - all who take but a sip just want more. XCOM is that formula, and whilst XCOM 2 is going to drop in February 2016 and do the whole isometric turn-based combat gameplay all over again in new and exciting ways, Enemy Within is the only experience available baring the name on consoles. Gameplay puts you in control of a squad of your own choosing, where you'll pick and customise everything from armours and loadouts, to psychokinetic augmentations and even mech suits. Enemy Within is the expansion to 2012's Enemy Unknown, yet developers FireAxis updated and included so much new content, they re-released it as an entirely new disc. After taking the fight to the alien horde one creature at a time, you'll return to base where you'll need to balance the books on global expenditure, troop training and new weapons or items. It's stupidly in-depth, impeccably planned out on the developer-side and very well balanced, along with including permadeath to ensure you really care about each and every soldier that bites the dust. XCOM is strategic gameplay perfected with a tactile, responsive edge all its own, and one of the most personally rewarding games you can ever play.
