When Nintendo first announced the Switch back in late 2016, it seemed like one hell of a risky prospect - a Hail Mary pass to try and reverse the tide after the commercial failure of the Wii U.

And as optimistic as many were, few could've ever anticipated the system's immense critical and commercial success.

Undeniably aided by the release of flagship titles Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey in its very first year, the Switch outsold the Wii U's lifetime sales in just 10 months, and by the start of 2020 had zoomed past the Xbox One's also.

As of September 2020, it's surpassed an incredible 65 million units sold, with analysts currently pondering whether the hardware will be able to crack the 100 million milestone. You never know...
