7. Crunch Culture Continues

Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar

In recent years there's been an increased criticism of video game publishers which propagate a culture of crunch, where employees are "encouraged" to work brutal overtime in order for a game to meet its production targets.

Most prominently, Rockstar Games were taken to task by former Kotaku sleuth Jason Schreier for the egregious crunch practises they employed to bring Red Dead Redemption II to market, and more recent reports that CD Projekt RED is putting its staff through hell to complete Cyberpunk 2077.

Despite so many of these exposes doing the rounds in recent years, it's depressing that calls for industry-wide unionisation have made little traction, and a medium which generates billions of dollars in revenue can't find a way to ship games without burning out its employees.
