16. Hideo Kojima Parts Ways With Konami

Hideo Kojima spent the better part of three decades publishing his games under Konami, so it was a major shock when he suddenly parted ways with the company shortly before the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2015.

Though conflicting reports lay the blame in various quarters, the consensus seems to be that Konami wasn't happy with the speed at which MGS V's production was moving along, resulting in Kojima being forced to release the game incomplete.

Due to the Metal Gear property belonging to Konami, Kojima was blocked from promoting the game or even accepting a Game Award on its behalf, which combined with Konami's attempts to keep the franchise going without its creator, caused enormous fan backlash.

In the years since, Konami has pivoted towards mobile games while Kojima re-established Kojima Productions as an independent company, which released the terrific Death Stranding last year.
