20 Most Powerful Gaming Moments Of All Time

9. Fallout 3 (2008) -€“ Nuking Megaton

Bethesda

The Moment: Bethesda€™s entry into Black Isle€™s' Fallout series is filled with difficult moral decision which see the Lone Wanderer struggling to be ethically just in an age where morality arguably died with the Great War. No decision has near the same effect on the player as the choice of whether or not to detonate the long-dormant bomb which has been inactive in Megaton€™'s town square. Choosing to side with the unerring Mr. Burke will result in you watching Megaton€™'s complete destruction from the opulence of the Tenpenny Tower.

How Is It Powerful? As you watch the huge mushroom cloud on the horizon you will inevitably feel a deep pang of guilt knowing that you are irrefutably responsible. Though deep-down you are aware that all you have done is altered the code in a video game, the engrossing nature of Fallout 3 means that you feel that you have actually destroyed a town and with it all of its culture, mythology, and history. It is a strange feeling that this massive moment in the game can be entirely avoided, a real testament to the open-ended nature of this excellent RPG.
