Pretty much all of the mainline Super Mario games are overwhelmingly well-received by critics, so there's little reason to doubt what we've seen of this one so far.

For starters, with its new array of locales (including a New York-esque cityscape) and a potentially game-changing sentient hat gimmick which can help Mario during platforming, Odyssey could be a real shake-up for the franchise.

Not that it needs to be: critics and fans love Mario regardless and familiarity hasn't really harmed these games all that much in the past. With the Nintendo Switch desperately needing some big-hitters around the end of the year, Odyssey will be just the ticket.
